Description

The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of patrolling and surf awareness in order to participate in lifesaving operations. This is the core award to be a lifesaver in Australia.

Course Dates - Registrations Open Sept 16th from Midday.

Bronze Medallion course - 14th to 17th December 2024

​

Participants must first ensure they are approved financial members of the Club for 2024/25. Once you have your membership approved, you will receive a password to access the registration portal to register and pay for the Bronze Medallion course.

​Pre-Requisites

• Must be a financial Club member prior to course registration (a Membership Confirmation Form must be uploaded into the online Bronze Medallion registration platform).

• Must be at least 15 years old within 60 days of the final assessment.

• Able to swim 400m in 9 minutes. Download and complete the Timed Swim Form (this form must be uploaded into the Bronze Medallion Forms area via this link by December 1st, 2024).

Cost

An additional cost is payable upon registration. This is dependent on whether or not the course can be run as a live in camp or not. The cost covers training resources and award processing.

Skills Maintenance

An annual Skills Maintenance must be undertaken by 31st December to keep this award proficient.

Course Outcomes

• Contribute to the management of work health and safety (WHS)

• Follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control

• Describe surfing and environmental conditions and hazards

• Recognise appropriate beach types, conditions and areas in the surfzone for bathing

• Demonstrate surf skills

• Explain the functions of various systems in the human body

• Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques

• Perform basic resuscitation techniques (oxygen therapy, defibrillation)

• Identify basic patient management techniques

• Communicate in the workplace

• Perform radio communications using approved SLSA radios

• Perform patient approaches, support and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient

• Identify people in distress in an aquatic environment

• Perform surf skills

• Perform patient retrieval and support unaided by equipment

• Set up a patrol and describe your role

• Demonstrate standard patrol practices

• Team work

• Improve fitness

Assessment

Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios. This will take place on the final day of the course.
