IRB Crew (IRBC)

Description

The IRB Crew Certificate provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew and Inflatable Rescue Boat in surf rescue operations.

Course Dates

Participants must first register and pay for the IRB Crew Certificate course here.

​

Prior to the commencement of the course participants must complete their Life Saving Victoria course enrolment:

  1. ​Login to https://mt.lsv.com.au/login/ using your Surf Life Saving Australia Members Portal login details*

  2. Click on 'Find a New Course'

  3. Look for IRB Crew Certificate at Anglesea SLSC and click 'Enrol'

Pre-Requisites

  • Must be a financial Club member prior to course registration (a Membership Confirmation Form must be uploaded into the online IRB Crew registration platform).

  • Must be at least 15 years and of age on the date of the final assessment.

  • Must hold a proficient Bronze Medallion.

Skills Maintenance

An annual Skills Maintenance must be undertaken by 31st December to keep this award proficient.

Course Outcomes

  • List the different classes of IRB

  • Identify components of an IRB and ancillary equipment

  • Contribute to the safe and efficient launching of an IRB

  • Demonstrate safe crewing positions while negotiating the surf

  • Perform emergency procedures

  • Observation, hazards and risks are identified and clearly communicated to the driver

Maintain an IRB:​

  • Perform pre-operational checks and preventative maintenance of the IRB hull

  • Perform post operational maintenance of the IRB hull

  • Report major wear or damage according to organisation procedures

  • Perform conscious and unconscious casualty pick ups

  • Perform complex rescues including swimming rescues, sailboarder and kite surfer rescues

Assessment

Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios. This will take place on the final day of the course.
